Free Printables: Animal, pirates and ninjas halloween masks for fashion dolls!

Went on and designed a few silly masks for regular playscale fashion dolls like Barbies to print at home ๐Ÿ˜€
Or, just for fun, or to tease your guinea pig (oh don’t tease guinea pigs…) or print out 50% to get dollhouse scale.
I know they don’t look like much, but took hours for me to make them… I may refine them later and update, but then again, there’s only so many free hours in a day so I thought better share now as otherwise I might forget…

Print on thicker paper/cardstock. The original is postcard size, approx 10x15cm /4×6” so make sure you’re printing 100% and NOT fit to page otherwise you’ll end up with huge masks! Unless, you want 1/3 masks for SD BJD, then choose to print Fit to page, it might work, let me know! ๐Ÿ˜€ Though the print quality may be very poor if printed bigger, I re-scaled these to allow easy print in their intended size.

Don’t have a printer?

Made them available as higher resolution greeting cards on Cafepress, should you not have a printer, or maybe someone might find this a nice idea for a combined birthday card including a little gift. The card is folded so you can still write your message there and it won’t get cut ๐Ÿ™‚ And honestly, if I’d go and print these to sell, the price would be much higher than cafepress cards…

How to make?

Tutorial coming later! Craft should be easy enough to make without instructions, but there are a few tips and tricks I’d like to share to make sure you won’t get frustrated with this tiny craft – it can be tricky making delicate little masks, so hoping to make video tutorial next week-end.

Stay tuned on this blog and Merineiti youtube channel!

Ps. you can always wish for a craft!
Pps. Yes, I think I’m whimsical enough to make a few celebrity masks available (to print at home only) to your dolls to wear ๐Ÿ˜€ which celebrity would you want as a miniature mask?

Making your own head sculpts?

where do you find dolls with this sculpt?

where do you find dolls that have faces this charming?

Have you ever looked at your dolls and figurines, and thought they lack charisma? If only they’d have an unique face. Not just repainted, but sculpted.

This video makes sculpting human heads seem so easy…

the best I could do with air dry clay - Professor Snape figurine I made 13 years ago :D

the best I could do with air dry clay – Professor Snape figurine I made 13 years ago ๐Ÿ˜€

Years ago, I bought a set of ‘polymer clay’ from a hobby store. I’ve always loved working with real clay, find it relaxing and easy to work with, but the fact you have to find ceramic oven to burn your work is a drawback. Air dry clay is nowhere near as lovely material, it is too stingy (is that a word?) dries too quickly, and seems to be only suitable for bigger, rough works. At least I could never get much detail with it.

I’d rather save my money from buying air dry clay (that sometimes has already dried inside the package!) and make “Taikataikina” salt dough (salt+flour+water) it has about the same qualities as air dry clay, but a lot cheaper, non-toxic (unless you eat so much the salt may cause you to feel sick) and even vegan, organic and gluten free depending on the flour you use ๐Ÿ˜› and if you bake and use sealant on your work, it will last years! If you don’t, it will get mold one day…

Babbling… back to POLYMER CLAY

After buying the hobby shop clay set, ย I thought it was dreadful to work with, nothing came out like I wanted it to, and even baked, it looked like rubbery play dough.

Tossed them aside, and forgot about it.

Then, I stumbled upon another time lapse tutorial that came out as a very beautiful, realistic miniature things…
I also saw wonderful pieces of art, very detailed miniature mermaids and fairies that claimed to be made out of polymer clay!
Wondered, how on earth do they manage to work ย that awful stuff like that!

Saw that the discussions mentioned, that different clays have different qualities. Fimo is soft and flexible, Sculpey is fragile but beautiful.

So, I bought one little block of each… and was so surpised! ย The truth was, the stuff I had gotten in the first place as a novice, was a really horrible quality!
I managed to make quite pretty little statue for my dollhouse from sculpey, which unfortunately fell down and broke… it is fragile after baking. The fimo things came out okay. I think, maybe, with a little patience, practice and right tools, an original head sculpt in fashion doll size might happen! The next step, obviously, is how to attach the fragile head tot the ready made bodies…

unique head sculpts, anyone?

Good luck finding ready made head sculpts to base figurines of these characters…ย

Any ideas? Do you make things out of polymer clay? Feel free to post relevant links to the comments (youtube, flickr, pinteres, blog platforms… I will only publish links that is easily seen to lead to reliable sites, so please no bit.ly links and if you link to your own domain, please note so ๐Ÿ™‚ )

Pepakura – Papercraft

Kryten (Robert Llewellyn, Red Dwarf) Spare head nro 4

Kryten (Robert Llewellyn, Red Dwarf) Spare head nro 4. Please respect his life choices.

When I first read the word “pepakura” I couldn’t help snickering. “Peba” is Finnish slang for bottom, and “kura” means mud but is also slang for diarrhea … so together, pepakura is umm… not something you’d like talk about.

Okay, I know it’s actually just japanesed word for papercraft. Like Furuba is Fruits Basket.

As I can’t sew due machine trouble, thought about trying this craft out in the meantime.

Here’s the miserable excuse of a first one…

omg my first pepakuraa

I am building a Lara Croft cosplay, and thought how cool would it be to make your own props, like guns. But I could barely construct the magazine for the gun…

So, what to do next? Try to rehearse with simpler project?

No. No can do. Instead, bumped into a pepakura file of Kryten’s head (Red Dwarf)

Printed out, and made it.It’s lopsided, scruffy and I never really figured out the nose.

But I think some paint might smoothen it out a bit, and I am already thinking of making a new one. As this one came out about 17% smaller than a real head, I really want to scale it up and make it into a wearable mask!

*Okay so you’re supposed to resin the papercraft to make it sturdier. Haven’t yet figured out what is this mythical “Resin” people use, instead had a bottle of decoupage glue/lacque…

So, here’s Kryten’s head decoupaged with cherry blossom napkin, because why not? I call it the Spare Head number 4… the head that mysteriously went lost.

Kryten (Red Dwarf) Spare Head number 4 - respect his life choices

I am also already constructing a bigger Kryten head for a mask, but now it seems I might have scaled it a tiny bit too big – let’s see how it goes, trying to make it resemble Kryten more, and if it is too big for me then maybe someone with a bigger head might want it.

All in all, pepakura – papercraft. What a nice little puzzle!

In which I mean losing a few years of your life due stress and inventing whole new cuss words.

I’m sure someone might actually enjoy this as a hobby, someone who is very patient, likes everything in ruler straight precicion, is very detail orientated and is an over all petty person.

BUT I am a living proof that anyone can make it! Even this freehand sketch loving person can make papercraft. Not perhaps master it, but it’s doable ๐Ÿ˜›
I suggest starting by reading beginners tutorials about basics and choosing a big scale yet easy project.

I didn’t.

I wish I did, but I’m the kind of “learn by making mistakes, a lot of mistakes” person, but if you hate making mistakes then definitely read instructions first.

It is awful, time consuming, stupid little hobby… but strangely addictive! I’m already thinking of making designs of my own, which would mean learning 3D modeling, which I tried once when I wanted to make clothes designs to sims2 but soon discarded as a ridiculous computer stuff I really don’t need to be learning…

Too hot to sew, so I drew

It’s +30 degrees. I was happier when it was -30… you can always put on more clothes, but what do you do if you’re already in bikinis and it’s not socially acceptable to stroll around naked? So, did not sew, instead watched some Star Trek: The Next Generation (it’s been rerunned like trillion times but I still haven’t seen all episodes) and actually got around to draw and paint a little. It’s been too long, getting rusty…
Sorry, my scanner seems to think he’s a digital camera from the 90s… or one of those early cameraphones, the quality and color recognition is that bad ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

This morning the dog woke me up at 5.30. It’s 10.45 now, and the dog’s been happily sleeping ever since -_-
However, I’ve been awake, had a quick 6 am photoshoot, then morning coffee spiced with heavy duty photo editing to make this happen!
Art print available at ArtPal

It should go without saying that re-selling my design is a no-no, both legally and morally, but you’re more than welcome to share the picture with proper credit linking to this blog, my tumblr, facebook

And do print the image here to your dollhouse. And your friends’ dollhouses. To your scrapbook. Whatever. Personal use is always allowed. AmsterDamn, make a graffiti stencil out of it, I know I would if I were better at running.
Please send me a pic if you do ๐Ÿ™‚
I will start making print shirts/ totes for dolls (1:6 scale at least), so follow up if interested.
